WHAT ARE THE SALARY AND BENEFITS?

The salary for the Toshiba Fellowship Programme is usually in the region of 10 million JPY per annum (variable by year). There is also a generous relocation allowance and package of benefits.

Toshiba will support the visa application process and your flights to Japan.

WHAT WOULD THE JOB BE LIKE?

Fellows usually join Toshiba for one year on a Research Fellowship Contract. You will be assigned to one of the research facilities all located within one and a half hours of central Tokyo.

Whichever laboratory you join, you can expect to be working on highly innovative research in a supportive environment. You will be assigned a mentor from your research group to assist you both at work and outside the workplace, helping you to feel at home in a new country.

Toshiba’s research facilities operate a standard working week of five days Monday – Friday and close on all Japanese National Holidays.

You can find out more about past Fellows’ experiences of working at our laboratories here.

WHAT WOULD MY LIFE IN JAPAN BE LIKE?

Toshiba Fellows are always offered a choice between Toshiba company accommodation and private accommodation. We give the Fellow advice and support to find whichever home they will feel most happy in during their stay in Japan.

Japan offers something for everyone, from the bustling action of Tokyo to the peaceful walks of East Kyoto. Toshiba Fellows enjoy a variety of cultural and leisure pursuits outside of their research work, which you can read more about here.

WOULD I COPE WITH THE LANGUAGE BARRIER?

All research discussions and written work will be in English. However, many Toshiba Fellows enjoy the experience of learning a new language skill, at the same time as the challenges of their research work. A basic grasp of Japanese helps Fellows fully appreciate the time spent in Japan. Fellows are given an opportunity to learn Japanese during the Programme. And of course, Toshiba staff also like to practice their English skills with you!

WHAT’S THE TFP ALUMNI NETWORK?

The Toshiba Fellow remains a Fellow for life! The Toshiba Fellowship Alumni members are very important to us and the company endeavours to maintain the close relationship held during the Fellow's time with Toshiba in Japan.

Every year, all previous Toshiba Fellows are invited to a reunion dinner in London. Top executives of Toshiba in Japan also attend, and so past Fellows can continue their association with Toshiba long after they have completed their research post. They can also meet up with other Alumni members to reminisce on their time spent in Japan and to network with one another.

WHAT ARE MY CAREER PROSPECTS AFTER THE TOSHIBA FELLOWSHIP?

The Programme provides scientists and researchers with a chance to stimulate their career with valuable industrial experience. It can open doors to a wide variety of employment prospects; past Fellows enjoy careers in academia and industry in Japan, the US and Europe. Some have remained with Toshiba and others have gone on to join other leading companies. All Toshiba Fellows enjoy successful careers, building on the foundations of their experience at Toshiba's labs in Japan.
