Embedded System Engineer (Fixed Term)

Toshiba’s Bristol Research and Innovation Laboratory (BRIL) are currently building an extremely large smart city testbed for open Industrial Internet of Things (IoT) research. This will involve more than 200 multi-radio IoT units deployed on lampposts and buildings across the city and provide a platform for exploring cutting-edge wireless technologies and future Industrial IoT (IIoT) systems.
A fixed-term research and development position for a government funded project is available at the Bristol Research and Innovation Laboratory of Toshiba Research Europe Limited, UK. Wireless Network Engineer is a key role for making this ambitious project a success. The project aims to go beyond the IoT hype and actualize multiple Cyber Physical Systems testbeds along with deploying several applications for smart city and Industry 4.0 domains in real-world settings.
The ideal candidate is expected to have finished his/her M.Sc or M.Eng in electronics, computer science, telecommunications, or a related field.
•Develop and test SW/HW interfaces for a hierarchical IoT testbed infrastructure.
•Work as part of a team towards developing firmware for in-house hardware, including embedded wireless solutions.
•Develop and Implement novel communication systems and protocols.
•Develop drivers and S/W libraries support for new hardware such as new radio platform and sensors.
•Develop and implement communication mechanisms and interface between multiple radio technologies.
•The ideal candidate will have 3+ years of embedded software development experience with commercial SoC products.
•Deep understanding of software engineering principles, and core computer science fundamentals.
•Fundamental knowledge of C and C++, compilers and build tools for Arm Cortex-M/AVR platforms.
•Proficiency with multiple developer source code control solutions (Git preferred).
•Significant experience with memory constrained Real Time Operating Systems (RTOS).
•Working knowledge of computer architecture with particular emphasis on the HW/SW interfaces of communication or storage subsystems.
•Experience with prototyping, emulation systems, and virtual platforms.
•Familiarity with UARTs and other embedded communication interfaces.
•Proficiency debugging embedded software systems, JTAG/SWD, and oscilloscopes/logic analysers.
•Proficiency with the Linux operating system (embedded preferred).
•Preferred rapid electronics prototyping/fabrication experience.
•Documentation and software testing experience desirable.
Salary £40k to £50k depending on experience plus a generous benefit package.
