Toshiba’s Bristol Research & Innovation Laboratory has an established track-record of innovation in wireless communications. Located in Bristol, UK, one of England’s most attractive city centres, it works closely with numerous partners, including nearby University of Bristol; it files patents, publishes in leading peer-reviewed journals and conferences, and transfers advanced concepts and prototypes to Toshiba’s business divisions.
We are looking for exceptional candidates to join our research programmes and applicants should be junior researchers with a PhD in the relevant research area (or working towards completion of a PhD programme). Research engineers are expected to be motivated to innovate, produce high quality publications and able to work independently while thriving in a team environment.
Candidate’s research skills mentioned on their CV should be supported by evidence in terms of publications in journals, magazines, conferences, patents filed etc.
Digital Power Amplifier Engineer
Applications are invited to apply for a Radio Frequency (RF) Power Amplifier (PA) researcher role at Toshiba Research Europe Ltd. The successful applicant will be responsible for the research and development of next generation multi-way load-modulated Digital PA for 5G and broadcast applications.
Responsibilities:
- The research and development of high efficiency RF PA architectures
- Generation of intellectual property
- Dissemination of work through publication
- Work as part of a team
- Proposing future RF related research topics
Mandatory requirement:
- A PhD degree in Electronic Engineering
- Experience in the design, simulation and development of switching RF PAs
- Experience with designing Doherty, Outphasing or other load-modulated PAs
- Experience in the design of passive networks
- Good experience with NI/AWR Microwave Office or similar
- Good understanding of modern lab test equipment, i.e. spectrum and network analysers
- Good hardware development and soldering skills
Desirable:
- Knowledge of modern communication and broadcast standards
- Experience with optimisation algorithms
- An understanding of digital pre-distortion and other PA linearization techniques
- Good communications skills
- An ability to develop novel solutions to complex problems
- Experience with load-pull systems from Focus, Maury etc
- Experience with CREE or equivalent GaN devices
Background information:
The advent of digital communication and broadcast standards with high peak-to-average power ratios (PAPR) requires that RF PAs achieve high efficiency not only at peak output power, but over their whole dynamic range of the signal. Several techniques like Envelope Tracking, Doherty, Outphasing and Dynamic Load Modulation have been developed to meet these requirements. Unfortunately, they are unable to meet the demands of future communications and broadcast standards. To pursue this goal, Toshiba is investigating Digital Power Amplifiers exploiting load modulation. This job offers an exciting opportunity for a willing researcher to be at the forefront of cutting-edge PA technology with an opportunity to make a name for themselves in an area which is expected to grow in the future.
Toshiba Research Europe Limited has filed many patents and published many papers in the area of RF PA over the past decade. Some of this work has been turned into infrastructure products and is in use by Japanese broadcasters.
Salary £45k to £50k, depending on experience plus a generous benefit package will be offered. The Company is committed to the principle of equal opportunity in employment and will ensure that individuals are selected on the basis of their aptitudes, skills and abilities.
