Toshiba Europe Ltd (TEUR) have been at the forefront of research on photonic approaches to quantum technology for the past two decades.  During this time they have made many breakthroughs in the field of quantum communications, such as record bit rates, operation over long fibres and integration with conventional optical signals in fibre networks.  They have also made a leading contribution to research on the photonic devices required in current and future quantum networks.  Recently they launched a business to commercialise quantum key distribution and have already deployed their technology with partners in the UK, Europe, US and Japan.

We invite applications for a research post at the Cambridge Research Laboratory working on the development of photonic integrated circuits for quantum communication applications.  The successful candidate will have the opportunity to conduct world leading research in this highly dynamic field with an excellent team and resources.

Responsibilities:

  • Design of photonic integrated circuits for quantum applications
  • Conducting experimental research on quantum communications using processed chips
  • Building optical set ups and interfacing with high-speed electronics
  • Designing and implementing software to control experimental set ups
  • Managing a lab, including procurement of equipment and parts
  • Analysing experimental data and simulating performance
  • Writing scientific papers, reports and design notes
  • Conference presentations and internal reporting
  • Communication with collaborators in the UK, Europe and Japan

Mandatory requirements:

  • A PhD in Physics, Electronic Engineering or related discipline
  • Deep knowledge of optics, fibre optics and electronics
  • Several years of hands-on experience of research on optical or fibre-optical systems
  • Good understanding of protocols and experimental approaches for quantum cryptography
  • Track record of world leading research in photonic systems or devices
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal

Desirable:

  • Experience of cleanroom processes
  • Experience of optical or electronic device packaging
