Job Description

We are recruiting a Scientist to join us to research and develop quantum detector technology to sense single photons. Based on semiconductor avalanche photodiodes, our technology has applications in quantum key distribution, quantum networks, and quantum sensing, all of which we are developing here at Toshiba Europe Limited. The role requires skills in semiconductor heterostructure and device design, optoelectronic characterisation, cleanroom fabrication, and close collaboration with partners in academia and industry. The successful candidate will also be responsible for characterisation and measurement of quantum detectors, and work within a highly accomplished team to integrate them into quantum systems for applications such as QKD.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and development of novel quantum light detectors
  • Coordination with partners in academia and industry on detector fabrication
  • Electro-optical characterisation and measurement of quantum detectors
  • Wider engagement through scientific dissemination and publications
  • Working as part of a team, towards aligned goals within the quantum information industry.

Essential requirements:

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline
  • Proven original research in quantum light detection, semiconductor devices, or related field
  • Experience of semiconductor fabrication design, including lithography mask design
  • Understanding of device fabrication processes
  • Optoelectronic device characterisation experience
  • Excellent collaborative communication skills
  • Capability of both creative, independent work and working within an interactive team.
  • Desire to acquire new skills and work with new technologies

Desirable requirements:

  • Experience with single photon avalanche photodiode development
  • Cleanroom fabrication experience
  • Semiconductor device simulation software
  • Knowledge of PCB design and assembly
  • GHz frequency electrical measurements
  • Good knowledge of computer control programming environments, e.g., LabVIEW/Python

Background information:

Based in Cambridge, UK, Toshiba Europe Ltd. has a proven track record in research and development of quantum information technology. Breakthroughs include the first single and entangled photon LEDs, and the first GHz operation of 1550nm single photon avalanche diodes. Recently, Toshiba launched a new business unit to commercialise research outcomes and Toshiba QKD systems are now deployed in telecommunication networks across the world.
